Some Thoughts on Photography
Wondering how we took the photographs for our website? With little photography experience ourselves, we weren’t entirely sure how to start either, but here are some thoughts we have on our experience so far…
For this website, we really wanted the images to have Beverley’s own touch. Being able to style, position and shoot out cushions and interiors in the way we wanted was a really satisfying experience. While we owe much credit to the team at Weave for their shots of our indoor rugs and wool throws, the majority of the photography on this website is our own. So, how did we do it?
Well, the primary camera used for our shoots was the Nikon D7500. This is a 21 megapixel camera with an 18-140mm lens which allows objects to be captured in great detail. Being beginners with photography, we shot a lot in ‘Auto’ mode. Shooting in a north-facing room, we took our photos in the early/mid-morning or after 3/4pm depending on how the light was looking to avoid too many shadows. Our bedroom shoots involved an ocean background (we know, we’re very lucky!), so editing was done on the laptop to ensure the blueness of the sea was showcased. Our solo pictures, such as cushions and books, were taken with a white board background, with the object facing direct light to avoid shadows on either side. Our outdoor cushion shoots were taken in the early afternoon with a large umbrella to mask the sun and avoid any shadows. Our Beverley’s Picnic Rug shoot was taken during the ‘blue hour’ following sunset to give a blue-ish hue with no direct sunlight.
Choosing the right time of day to shoot was important, often about 3 or 4pm was best to avoid shadows.
Ensuring the colours of the sea were vibrant in our pictures was crucial
Shooting in the ‘blue hour’ after sunset brings a sense of atmosphere to a picture and a feeling like you want to be there.
