Why We Love To Travel

She’s gone around the world a hundred times as an air hostess in her former career, but since becoming an interior designer, Beverley Sandoy has travelled the world for a different reason. Being able to immerse yourself in the artistic culture of other countries is something we cherish at Beverley Sandoy. When travelling abroad to countries such as India, Africa, France or Morocco, she’ll bring an extra suitcase knowing that it will come back home filled with new fabrics. Once back home, Beverley will eagerly get back into the studio and create new cushions out of her latest finds. In fact, the house is filled with influences from around the world, and vibrant colours resonant of countries like Bali infuse the house with life.

Beverley in India

Prior to this pandemic, if Beverley wasn’t at home she would be abroad, exploring a new country. She’s ventured into the various countries of Africa, including Namibia, Botswana, Zambia and South Africa, to spot local wildlife. She’s travelled through India, Bali and Morocco, bringing the colours of the cultures back home. A real New Zealander, Beverley adores the outdoors and is constantly exploring our country’s own backyard. In the summer months, you can find her fishing off the rocks or camping in the bush on the North Island, or on the slopes of Queenstown in the winter. Her love of the country is why New Zealand sheepskins have been hand-picked into our range, and why 99% of our materials have been sourced by local businesses.

It’s not just travel that has shaped Beverley Sandoy’s collection, but her heritage too. Sandoy was born and raised in New Zealand, but has a wider ancestry with relatives from Scotland and Samoa. This mix of European and Polynesian influences has shaped our collection. Our range of cushions includes various tartan patterns, inspired by Beverley’s Scottish heritage. Polynesian art often contains vibrant colours and floral patterns, which can be seen in our ‘Floral Scheme’, and is why Beverley loves the colours of Mexican artist Frida Kahlo. Check out our recent blog post to learn why we love Kahlo’s work.
